Con\u015ftiin\u0163a de sine a unei comunit\u0103\u0163i omene\u015fti, con\u015ftiin\u0163a particip\u0103rii la o lung\u0103 durat\u0103 istoric\u0103, \u015fi mai ales valorificarea vie\u0163ii prin aceast\u0103 participare \u2013 sunt acte de tr\u0103ire spiritual\u0103. Miturile, apocalipsele, misiunile istorice pe care \u015fi le revendic\u0103 orice na\u0163iune \u2013 nu au nimic de-a face cu via\u0163a biologic\u0103 sau economic\u0103 a unei a\u015fez\u0103ri omene\u015fti.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ancorat\u0103 prin \u00eens\u0103\u015fi fiin\u0163a ei \u00een spiritualitate \u2013 o na\u0163iune nu poate avea dec\u00eet un singur destin: s\u0103 creeze valori spirituale ecumenice. S\u0103 impun\u0103, cu alte cuvinte, tuturor celorlalte popoare universalismul ei. \u00cen ierarhia spiritual\u0103, ca \u015fi \u00een celelalte ierarhii, un \u201euniversalism\u201c nu se face prin sinteza tuturor virtu\u0163ilor, printr-un amalgam c\u00eet mai complet de valori. Ci, dimpotriv\u0103, universalismul se dob\u00eende\u015fte prin ad\u00eencirea p\u00een\u0103 la epuizare a specificului, a localului, a particularului. Actul adev\u0103ratei crea\u0163ii spirituale este tocmai aceast\u0103 valorificare complet\u0103 a unui act de tr\u0103ire individual\u0103. Un geniu nu face altceva dec\u00eet s\u0103 valorifice anumite st\u0103ri din via\u0163\u0103, care r\u0103m\u0103seser\u0103 p\u00een\u0103 atunci obscure, inerte sau nesemnificative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">P\u00een\u0103 la Shakespeare, partea aceea din sufletul omului \u00een care tragicul se amesteca cu grotescul, \u00een care nebunia \u015fi somnul se \u00eenv\u0103lm\u0103\u015feau cu invectiva \u2013 nu fusese valorificat\u0103, \u015fi deci nu avea nici o semnifica\u0163ie. Oamenii tr\u0103iau acele st\u0103ri suflete\u015fti cu indiferen\u0163\u0103 sau cu ru\u015fine. Acel tragic grotesc nu avea p\u00een\u0103 atunci nici o grandoare, nici un sens. Shakespeare izbute\u015fte s\u0103 arate tocmai grandoarea \u015fi semnifica\u0163ia acestor st\u0103ri obscure \u015fi grote\u015fti. De-abia c\u00eend s-a impus con\u015ftiin\u0163ei europene geniul lui Shakespeare, s-a v\u0103zut c\u00eet de pu\u0163in se cunoscuse \u201esufletul omului\u201c, p\u00een\u0103 la el, acel \u201esuflet omenesc\u201c viu, mediocru, confuz, \u00eensetat de fericire \u015fi corupt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dostoevski face un act similar de crea\u0163ie spiritual\u0103: el valorific\u0103 p\u0103r\u0163i \u015fi mai obscure din sufletul omenesc. Gesturi f\u0103r\u0103 nici o semnifica\u0163ie moral\u0103, experien\u0163e penibile, suferin\u0163e opace, r\u0103t\u0103ciri suflete\u015fti \u015fi g\u00eeng\u0103veli intelectuale \u2013 un ocean de fapte mici \u015fi \u00eensp\u0103im\u00eent\u0103toare, pe care noi le ignoram sau le ascundeam, de care ne era sil\u0103 \u015fi pe care nu le men\u0163ionam niciodat\u0103 \u2013 toate acestea s\u00eent transfigurate prin interven\u0163ia lui Dostoevski, \u00een istorie. Dup\u0103 apari\u0163ia lui Dostoevski, aproape c\u0103 nu mai r\u0103m\u00eene fapt sufletesc uman care nu poate fi valorificat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Orice nou\u0103 valorificare a vie\u0163ii \u2013 \u015fi noi n-am dat, p\u00een\u0103 acum, dec\u00eet c\u00eeteva pilde din istoria literaturii \u2013 cap\u0103t\u0103 imediat valen\u0163e universale. Nu exist\u0103 crea\u0163ie spiritual\u0103 care s\u0103 nu poat\u0103 fi, dac\u0103 nu asimilat\u0103, cel pu\u0163in contemplat\u0103 de un considerabil num\u0103r de oameni, apar\u0163in\u00eend unor popoare \u015fi culturi deosebite. Lucrul acesta este \u015fi mai adev\u0103rat, dac\u0103 ne amintim de alte specii de crea\u0163ie spiritual\u0103 dec\u00eet cele literare. Bun\u0103oar\u0103, valorile cu care \u015fi-au \u00eembog\u0103\u0163it via\u0163a grecii vechi: m\u0103sura, melancolia, resemnarea etc. \u2013 valori care au putut fi asimilate de popoare foarte diferite (de la sirieni p\u00een\u0103 la romani \u015fi anglo-saxoni).<br \/>\nOrice nou \u201eideal\u201c cand este descoperit omenirii \u00eentregi de c\u0103tre un singur om \u00ee\u015fi cap\u0103t\u0103 valen\u0163e universale. Acesta este singurul \u201euniversalism\u201c pe care l-a acceptat \u015fi l-a asimilat istoria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dac\u0103 spiritul grecesc a modificat, structura mental\u0103 a \u00eentregii lumi europene \u2013 cre\u00eend o unitate continental\u0103 \u2013 el a f\u0103cut-o prin c\u00eeteva crea\u0163ii de geniu, cure valorificau via\u0163a oric\u0103rui om. Cre\u015ftinismul a izbutit s\u0103 \u00eentunece orizontul spiritual \u00een\u0103l\u0163at prin eforturile geniului grec tocmai pentru c\u0103 oferea o valorificare a vie\u0163ii \u015fi mai rodnic\u0103, \u015fi mai universal\u0103.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nu exist\u0103, deci, \u201euniversalism\u201c viabil \u00een afar\u0103 de o anumit\u0103 valorificare a vie\u0163ii descoperit\u0103 de un popor, de un om sau de o elit\u0103 \u2013 \u015fi impus\u0103 celorlal\u0163i \u00eentr-un mod organic, firesc. Cre\u00eend o singur\u0103 valoare spiritual\u0103 cu valen\u0163e universale \u2013 un popor domin\u0103 firesc o anumit\u0103 etap\u0103 din istorie, mai mare sau mai mic\u0103. Accept\u00eend primatul \u201edemocra\u0163iei\u201c, un popor se recunoa\u015fte dominat de o valorificare francez\u0103 a vie\u0163ii. C\u0103 acum, \u00een zilele noastre, democra\u0163ia pare un bun comun, c\u00ee\u015ftigat prin eforturile solidare ale umanit\u0103\u0163ii \u2013 este \u00eenc\u0103 o dovad\u0103 de eficien\u0163a universal\u0103 a acestei crea\u0163ii specifice spiritului francez.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C\u0103ci idealurile democra\u0163iei moderne rezum\u0103 solu\u0163iile g\u0103site de spiritul francez, problemei libert\u0103\u0163ii \u2013 problem\u0103 care se pusese din nou con\u015ftiin\u0163ei europene de dup\u0103 Rena\u015ftere \u015fi Reform\u0103, pe care fiecare neam se trudea s-o rezolve \u00een parte, dar pe care numai geniul francez a rezolvat-o \u00een a\u015fa fel \u00eenc\u00eet s\u0103 poat\u0103 fi asimilat\u0103 de to\u0163i. \u201eAsimilat\u0103\u201c, este un fel de a vorbi; mai precis, acceptat\u0103 pentru o bucat\u0103 de vreme, a\u015fa cum triburile germanice acceptaser\u0103 pentru o bucat\u0103 de vreme no\u0163iunile civile romane\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201eNa\u0163ionalismul\u201c, a\u015fadar, nu are dec\u00eet ca un prim scop \u00eent\u0103rirea, purificarea \u015fi organiz\u0103rea for\u0163elor na\u0163ionale. Lupta na\u0163io\u00acnalismului contra formelor \u00eemprumutate, contra no\u0163iunilor str\u0103ine, contra crea\u0163iilor false este numai o etap\u0103, \u015fi nu cea mai pre\u0163ioas\u0103, din func\u0163ia pe care \u015fi-o propune el \u00een via\u0163a statului.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C\u0103ci un na\u0163ionalism care nu izbute\u015fte s\u0103 creeze valori spirituale ecumenice, valori pe care s\u0103 le impun\u0103 celorlalte neamuri \u2013 nu \u015fi-a atins misiunea. \u201eLupta contra formelor de via\u0163\u0103 str\u0103in\u0103\u201c nu se poate opri odat\u0103 cu instaurarea \u201eformelor de via\u0163\u0103 autohtone\u201c. Lucrul acesta poate avea o mare \u00eensemn\u0103tate civil\u0103 \u2013 dar nu \u015fi una in istoria universal\u0103. Lupta cea mai grea, \u015fi \u00een care se verific\u0103 for\u0163ele de crea\u0163ie ale unui neam, se d\u0103 dup\u0103 victoria na\u0163ionalismului. Adic\u0103, \u00een ceasul c\u00eend el \u00eencearc\u0103 s\u0103 devin\u0103 universal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Un na\u0163ionalism nu devine universal renun\u0163\u00eend la formele lui specifice \u015fi \u00eencerc\u00eend o \u201e\u00een\u0163elegere\u201c cu alte forme \u2013 ci devine universal c\u00eend izbute\u015fte s\u0103 valorifice \u00eentr-un mod propriu via\u0163a, cre\u00eend un sens nou al existen\u0163ei.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ceea ce se nume\u015fte \u201ecrea\u0163iile spirituale\u201c ale unui neam. Acestea s\u00eent: felul s\u0103u propriu de a valorifica via\u0163a \u2013 printr-un nou model de eroism, sau de dreptate, sau de m\u00eentuire, sau poate printr-o crea\u0163ie de geniu \u00een domeniul artelor etc. \u201eNa\u0163ionalis\u00acmul\u201c nu tinde numai s\u0103 fac\u0103 posibile \u015fi s\u0103 promoveze asemenea crea\u0163ii spirituale \u00een cadrele neamului \u2013 el tinde mai ales s\u0103 provoace valorile ecumenice, prin care s\u0103 se poat\u0103 manifesta peste hotare. A se \u201emanifesta\u201c, evident, nu \u00eenseamn\u0103 numaidec\u00eet a crea forme care pot fi \u00eemprumutate de al\u0163ii \u2013 ci a crea forme prin care al\u0163ii s\u0103 ia cuno\u015ftin\u0163\u0103 efectiv\u0103 de neamul nostru, lu\u00eend cuno\u015ftin\u0163\u0103 de anumite realit\u0103\u0163i pe care acest neam le-a desco\u00acperit. C\u00eend Dostoevski sau Shakespeare au trecut hotarele \u0163\u0103rilor lor, asta n-a adus dup\u0103 sine o \u201e\u00eemprumutare\u201c a acestor crea\u0163ii. Ci, \u00een primul r\u00eend, o luare de cuno\u015ftin\u0163\u0103 a unui nou univers spi\u00acritual, descoperit de Shakespeare sau Dostoevski. C\u00eend doina rom\u00e2neasc\u0103 a fost cunoscut\u0103 peste hotare, n-a fost \u201eimitat\u0103\u201c; ea a valorificat, \u00eens\u0103, o anumit\u0103 parte din sufletul omenesc, pe care nu o str\u0103b\u0103tuse p\u00een\u0103 atunci nici o alt\u0103 crea\u0163ie folcloric\u0103. Prin doin\u0103, ca \u015fi prin Dostoevski sau Shakespeare \u2013 un str\u0103in a p\u0103truns \u00een anumite niveluri ale realit\u0103\u0163ii, necunoscute p\u00een\u0103 atunci; valorific\u00eend, totodat\u0103, anumite p\u0103r\u0163i din suflet, inerte, obscure, caduce.<br \/>\nAstfel trec hotarele \u015fi \u201edomin\u0103\u201c crea\u0163iile spirituale ale unui neam. Crea\u0163ii care, \u00eenc\u0103 o dat\u0103, nu pornesc niciodat\u0103 de la \u201euniversal\u201c, ci dintr-o experien\u0163\u0103 specific\u0103, dintr-o profund\u0103 tr\u0103ire a realit\u0103\u0163ilor locului, dintr-o epuizare total\u0103 a unui sentiment \u201eetnic\u201c; ca s\u0103 ajung\u0103, prin transfigurarea geniului, o valorificare nou\u0103 a vie\u0163ii.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Este u\u015for de \u00een\u0163eles, \u00eens\u0103, c\u0103 asemenea eforturi de transfi urare nu pot rodi dec\u00eet \u00eentr-un stat organic, na\u0163ional, \u00een care omul \u00ee\u015fi reg\u0103se\u015fte problemele fundamentale: moartea, iubirea, \u201esensul\u201c, libertatea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Toat\u0103 istoria lumii nu este dec\u00eet istoria miturilor na\u0163ionale \u015fi a luptei dintre felurite valorific\u0103ri ale vie\u0163ii. De altfel, \u00eens\u0103\u015fi existen\u0163a omului nu e dec\u00eet un lung \u015fi tragic \u015fir de \u00eencerc\u0103ri de a da un sens acestei existen\u0163e. Este paradoxal, este tragic dac\u0103 vre\u0163i \u2013 dar a\u015fa este. \u015ei dup\u0103 cum cea mai mare glorie a unui om, \u015fi \u00eenceputul m\u00eentuirii sale este g\u0103sirea unui sens rodnic al propriei sale existen\u0163e (act de crea\u0163ie spiritual\u0103) \u2013 tot a\u015fa cea mai mare grij\u0103 a unui neam este g\u0103sirea unui sens propriu al existen\u0163ei sale istorice, deci de valorificare proprie a vie\u0163ii (act de asemenea, de crea\u0163ie spiritual\u0103).
