Talking about poetry, new releases and literary events, I asked her if she knew the name of a poet from New Zealand. My girlfriend thought about it for a little while, then smiled and responded: ‘No one except you.’I repeated the experiment with another four or five writer friends from Romania and they all shrugged. I then asked my fellow poets from Hawke’s Bay Live Poets, the group that I have been attending for three years. When I asked the question, if they knew the name of a Romanian poet, many of them pointed their index finger at me.

I thought that this was an opportunity to bridge the distance between the two countries and cultures located at opposite ends of the world.I imagined a book in which ten poets from New Zealand and ten poets from Romania were sharing aspects of their work and their biographies. The role I assumed was of a translator and editor, by relying on my experience of more than a decade as a book editor at Porto Franco Publishing house and Oscar Print Publishing house in Romania.

I started to draft a list and the first poems I translated were those of Bill Sutton. At the monthly meeting of our group in February, I shared with my colleagues my project idea. Bill read his poem “New Harvest” in English and I read its translation in Romanian.

My poet colleagues were enthusiastic and positive about the implementation of this project, just like my Romanian poet friends.

The selection criteria for the Romanian poets was easy, inviting friends and pen colleagues that I know and admire for years for their human qualities and talent as writers.I have been close friends with some of them for a lifetime. For example, Tudor Opriş, who unfortunately left this world in January 2015, became my mentor when I was in my first year in high school. I was always amazed by his creative power, ingenuity and the diversity of his creation. I always admired Tudor for his generosity. He mentored hundreds of children and talented young people and edited their creations in creative camps, in the literary circle Sagittarius which he coordinated for four decades. The door of his house was always open to those who needed his encouragement and guidance. I felt blessed to be one of his disciples and one of his family friends for 50 years. Tudor is considered the first historian of school magazines and literary debut of Romanian pupils over a period of nearly 200 years. I felt honored to be included in his book History of Romanian Writers Literary Debut During School (1820-2000) and I was the editor of this book.

The selection of New Zealand poets for this volume was a bit more difficult, because I’m still learning to understand their themes, their techniques and to distinguish their „voices”. I wanted to include in the project as many poets from our group from Hawke’s Bay, whom I consider family, because among them I feel „at home”.

I invited nine colleagues from our poetry group to be part of this volume, plus three others poets I met at national poetry conferences or were invited to present their creations at our meetings.

The volume includes 12 poets from New Zealand (some of them bringing influences of their culture of origin) and 12 poets of Romanian origin.

I am hoping I will have energy to continue this project in the next 2-3 years.

The ordering criteria in the book is from the oldest poet to the youngest, alternating poets of the two cultures.

Translation from one language to another has been an interesting process that required time and reflection. The challenge for me was the translation of rhyming poems and English translation of Romanian poems, some of them very metaphorical and incomprehensible even to Romanian poetry lovers.

I have much more understanding and respect for translators after these last eleven months. At times, I felt that I reached „to the bone of poetry” in trying to understand and express the „true” meaning or message of poets.

I would like to mention that Alexandra Balm is the only poet I asked to translate her poems. Alexandra has a similar situation to mine: she was born in Romania, immigrated to New Zealand and is able to poetically express herself in both languages.

I believe that the title of this volume, Poetical Bridges, the poems and also the biographies will become 24 spiritual bridges between the two cultures. This book is a promising start to embrace diversity, love for poetry, appreciation for those who write and those who read it. I would like it to be a way to get to know one another that will enrich and inspire us to continue creative poetry writing.

Valentina Teclici,

November 2016

Cuvânt înainte Ideea acestei cărţi care adună în paginile ei poeţi din două culturi, a răsărit dintr-o convorbire avută pe [&hellip

[3

post-28722","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-articole
["GET
