Mark Raffills: Poduri Lirice – Poetical Bridges (poeme bilingve)

Words have been Mark Raffills’ stock-in-trade for over 40 years. Whether scribbling dispatches from the famine-stricken Horn of Africa or penning reviews of rock albums, or more latterly producing copy, newsletters and magazines for a whole range of clients, the Nelson-based publisher, journalist, and publicist has crafted text as though his life – and the lives of others – depended on it.
Convener of both the Golden and Nelson Live Poets, Mark is happy telling his poems on street corners, in art galleries and pubs or at festivals and poetry events across the country. He was a finalist in the inaugural NZ Poetry Slam in 2011 and again in 2015 and, also tours from time to time with the bluegrass/folk/blues-based Dirt Floor Alliance.
Matters of the heart, our place on the planet and observations of family and friends, all are muse and inspiration for the words which so far have found their way into three self-published collections – the cornfield and other poems, Grace and Favour and Loved, Misloved and Loved Again. Mark has attended every concert Bob Dylan has played in New Zealand since his first visit here in 1978. That’s about 21 concerts or so.

FATA POEMULUI DANS
GIRL OF THE DANCE POEM
There are puddles on the pavement,
tears upon the ground beneath
a moon running full scared
behind shadow clouds
racing for all they are worth.
You dance in front of the estuary,
joyful and more generous
than a plate-glass, shop-front window,
everything is seen in the depths
of its dark waters.
You dance like a hundred spirits,
lithe and nimble and powerful all at once,
your brown eyes smiling and strong
and knowing the times when you need
to press into open arms.
And I, your Walter Raleigh,
a father in full moonlight,
watch your dance
through puddles on the pavement
through tears upon the ground.
la fel de ascuţit ca sabia lui Artur;
uneori, şi tu ai nevoie
să fii îmbrăţişat.
Calci urmele paşilor
pe nisip şi te întrebi
ce te determină
să mergi şi să cânţi waiata
de unul singur.
THE SINGER
You sing waiata
with an infectious laugh
but your eyes are sad.
You talk of dreams dancing on blue water
but brief breaks of silence have their say, too.
In your eyes
the prophets and the ancestors
peer into these times,
the stillness is invaded
by the breaking beats
of your heart.
A healing cloak of moa
adorns your shoulders,
the warm massage of
feathers on flesh fashions comfort
as rare as the Takahe.
You weld waiata
as sweet as Homer’s sirens
as sharp as Arthur’s sword;
you sometimes have need
of arms to hold you.
You follow the imprints of feet
in the sand
and wonder what it is
that draws you
to walk and sing waiata alone.
AŞTEPTÂND ÎN GARĂ
Astepţi pe peron
ca oportunitatea să se ivească.
Blestemi întârzierea naibii
care-ţi ţine picioarele
într-o mare de lut –
asta este diferenţa
între viaţă şi moarte,
faimă şi obscuritate
sau noroc şi sărăcie?
Nu contează.
Poţi merge fie în jos
ţipând în fălci
sau găseşte o cale afară de aici
şi oferă-ţi mâna violonistului
sau târăşte-ţi picioarele
la o ţopăială sau un dans irlandez,
ştiind că
din orice puţ vei bea
oricare câmp vei ara
setea şi muncile
sunt la fel
vrabia cade fără nume
iar trenul soseşte doar atunci când va sosi.

WAITING AT THE STATION
You wait on the platform
for opportunity to strike.
You curse the damn delay
that holds your feet
in a sea of clay –
is this the difference
between life and death,
fame and obscurity
or fortune and poverty?
It matters not.
You can either go down
screaming into the jaws
or bum a lift out of here
and offer your hand to
the fiddle player
or shuffle your feet
to a jig or reel,
knowing that
whatever well you drink from
whatever field you till
the thirst and the labours
are both the same
the sparrow falls without a name
and the train will only come when it will.
