Penelope Foster: Poduri Lirice – Poetical Bridges (poeme bilingve)

Penelope Foster introduces herself: I was born and raised in Natal, South Africa. I arrived in Napier as a young wife and mother in 1974, and have been happy to live in Hawke’s Bay ever since. Reading and reciting poetry have always been enjoyable to me for as long as I can remember. However, I only began writing my own verses in my forties. Both rhyming lines and free verse have their respective challenges and I like to try my hand at both. I love to walk, and am often inspired by the surrounding scenes of beauty or interest as I do so. Over the years I have written a number of love poems. In this collection, all my three poems are love poems of a sort. “A Mother’s Love” was penned for a dear friend in South Africa when her son was tragically killed, and I could not be with her. Writing words of comfort was all I could do. “Winter” was inspired partly by the death of an elderly client of mine, whose wife had lovingly cared for him for many years. Love (poems) and death seem unlikely companions, but both are inseparable from human existence. I first read at Hawke’s Bay Live Poets group about 1996, and have been a fairly regular contributor ever since. In 2014, I published poems in “Murmurs from Within”, a small book of poems, self-published by a friend, a member of The Theosophical Society that I also belong to. In 2014, I, along with three other poets, published poems in Murmurs From Within, a small book of poems, self-published by a friend, a member of The Theosophical Society that I also belong to.’

Dragostea Este!
LOVE IS
Love is the purple of a polished amethyst
the gold of a winter sunset.
It is the smell of raindrops
hitting dry earth
and the sea lit up by a
rising orange moon.
Love is your own bed after a month away
a hot bath at the end of a busy day.
Love is cool water on a sizzling day,
an open fire on a frosty day.
It is a sympathetic hug on a sad day,
and shared laughter on a happy day.
Love is the first smile of your first-born,
It is a stranger’s smile in a strange town.
Love is where you choose it to be!
Love is you, Love is me.
Love Is!
IARNA
Viţa de vie iarna, epuizată, a renunţat
la roadele muncii ei,
aşa cum tu ai renunţat, Iubirea Mea.
Regenerarea se odihneşte în interiorul
formeler negre osoase
să înflorească într-un alt sezon
de timp şi spaţiu.
La fel ca tine, Iubirea Mea.
Dar anotimpul tău nu va fi limitat
de spaţiu şi timp
şi de aspectul armonios al acestui plan.
Munţii îndepărtaţi sunt
albaştri cu ghemuiri reci
sub noile lor pături
moi şi albe,
reflectând inima mea amorţită
rece şi tremurând
la cuvintele de condoleanţe
amabile şi lipsite de sens.
Nopţi lungi de iarnă, împrejmuite
de lumina focului şi amintiri
oarbe la stele strălucitoare sau
vânturile sudice ce pătrund la os.
Dar unde eşti, Iubirea Mea?
Voi aştepta vara
să se strecoare cu frunze noi
înapoi în lumea mea.
WINTER
The exhausted winter vines have given up
the fruits of their labour,
as you have, My Love.
Regeneration rests within
their bony black shapes
to flourish in another season
of time and space.
So too with you, My Love.
But your season will not be limited
by space and time
and shapely form of this plane.
The distant mountains are
blue with cold
huddling beneath their new
blankets, soft and white,
reflecting my numb heart
cold and shivering
under words of condolence
kind and meaningless.
Long winter nights, closed in
by firelight and memories
oblivious to brilliant stars or
bone-chilling southern winds.
But, where are you, My Love?
I shall wait for the summer
to creep with new leaves
back into my world.
DRAGOSTEA UNEI MAME
Dragostea unei mamei îndură:
Este agonia naşterii
Transformată dintr-o dată în extaz.
Dragostea unei mamei îndură:
Ea depăşeşte toate barierele
Oboselii, epuizării,
Egoismului, frustrării.
Dragostea unei mamei îndură:
Creează multă
Minunaţie şi râs,
Cultivă atâta
Generozitate şi bucurie.
Dragostea unei mame îndură:
Supravieţuieşte orice pierdere.
Ea curge veşnic şi hrăneşte
Vastul ocean al iubirii universale
Care ghidează până şi fiecare
Minuscul destin la adevărata împlinire.
Dragostea unei mamei îndură!
A MOTHER’ S LOVE
A mother’s love endures:
It is the agony of birth
Transformed at once to ecstasy.
A mother’s love endures:
It overcomes all barriers
Of tiredness, exhaustion
Of selfishness, frustration
A mother’s love endures:
It creates much
Wonderment and laughter,
It nurtures such
Generosity and joy.
A mother’s love endures:
It survives all loss.
It flows eternally and feeds
The vast ocean of Universal Love
Which ever guides each
Tiny destiny to true fulfilment.
A Mother’s Love Endures!
